The Truth Behind Paperless Driving Licences

ID Cards By Another Name

Do you remember not so long ago in the almost distant past, the issue of the ID card?

Millions of tax payers money, it would have cost £4.5bn, was wasted on a database to introduce the new ID card.  Then for no apparent reason it was with drawn with Theresa May announcing that it would be scrapped within 100 days of the coalition taking power in 2010.

You could say that it was the influence of the Data Protection Lobby putting the Government under pressure to withdraw.  Perhaps the government did indeed fall to the whims of the lobby, whatever the case they did claiming that too many Civil Liberties would be infringed.

However, in the end it is of little consequence as the majority of the population already has an ID card and a system that the Government can track you on - The (now paperless) Driving Licence.

The DVLA database, the one that you can now access if you have your Driving Licence and National Insurance number, already stores your:

  • photo
  • Date of Birth
  • Home Address
  • Signature

So information that the ID card would have listed.  A win win for the Government as the public will not know the difference and there will be no challenge from the Civil Liberties and Data Protection Lobby.

It's important to know where your information is held and by whom.  It's also important to have as much control over the storage and use of your information.

With Vehicle Data Display you will be reminded to keep an eye on the status of all your information.  We will remind you to update if you have recently bought a 2nd hand car or if you are due a renewal.  Best of all you have instant access to your information at all times via our App and your unique username and password details.
